As a school, we aim to deliver high quality teaching that ensures children are able to develop an acquisition of knowledge and skills to write clearly and coherently in line with the National Curriculum.

Staff work hard to instil a love for writing from an early age. We want children to acquire the basic skills needed to write effectively, such as using advanced vocabulary, gaining a secure understanding of grammatical features and spelling efficiently by applying spelling patterns and rules.
Our three-week units of writing include a range of genres that are carefully chosen to re-visit previous earning and introduce new ideas and concepts throughout the year groups. Each unit begins with pupils being immersed in a language-rich novel or short story. As the unit builds, children are presented with inspiring and engaging materials designed to spark curiosity and develop writing skills. Using high quality model texts and familiar texts from the Ark Literacy Spine, pupils are able to apply what they have read to enhance their writing.
Our pupils are taught the required basic skills for the particular genre to connect with the intended audience. The writing process is then modelled through a planning, drafting, editing and redrafting process with clear context and purpose before publishing a final piece. We teach writing through the Ark English Mastery Curriculum, a fully resourced curriculum based on the latest research and pedagogy. Our ambitious approach involves immersing our pupils in language rich narratives which have been specially chosen as part of the Ark Reading Spine.
We use model text and toolkits, shared writing and language-rich discussion which ultimately leads up to independent innovations and applications. Children’s published pieces are assessed using the teacher assessment frameworks to identify progress made and areas for development.
Our ambitious writing curriculum fully supports all learners in the classroom, no matter their current writing level. Opportunities to link to previous knowledge are planned and purposeful, allowing pupils to make connections and build upon previous learning. Lessons are designed to be accessed by all learners and are adapted depending on pupil needs.
Our pupils with SEND are exposed daily to quality first teaching. Activities are then adapted or created bespoke to support the needs of every child. Formative assessment is used throughout lessons and pupils are encouraged to further develop their skills through peer discussion and editing. We celebrate the creativity and uniqueness in every finished piece of writing.
