Reading

Throughout the curriculum, we aim to ensure that all children become competent, confident, life-long readers.

At Lift Hall Road, we recognise that reading underpins all other learning and is a crucial skill required to give our children the best start in life. Our Ark Reading Spine exposes children to high-quality texts and aims to instil a love of reading in every pupil. We celebrate reading at home and have two very special book vending machines which children visit after every fifty reads.

The Sequence

Reading begins in EYFS, where pupils are immersed in our ‘Favourite Five’ half termly Reading Spine. They also begin to access Read Write Inc (RWI). This systematic approach is used throughout KS1 building and re-capping pupils’ phonetical awareness.

As children progress to Key Stage Two, they are immersed in literature through the Ark Reading Spine. The Ark English Mastety Curriculum is designed to develop children's knowledge and skills in: fluency, inference, retrieval, vocabulary exposure and comprehension. Staff work hard to ensure children leave Lift Hall Road as fluent readers who enjoy reading for pleasure.

The Learning

In EYFS and Key Stage One pupils follow the Read Write Inc (RWI) systematic phonics program (see our phonics page for more information.

In Key Stage Two, pupils follow the Ark Curriculum Reading Spine. Each two week unit of learning exposes pupils to a variety of genres and extracts. Pupils begin with speedy reading activities and learning new vocabulary. As each unit progresses, children work independently, and in groups, to explore various aspects of the text and further develop reading skills, including comprehension.

Assessment is at the heart of our reading offer and we use Accelerated Reader to ensure our pupils are making progress in both language acquisition and comprehension. Children also take part in fluency assessments at various points in the academic year to establish progress in fluency.

The Teaching

Children are read to daily in Guided Reading and at any other opportunity throughout the day to encourage

reading for pleasure. We aim to instil a love of reading in every child no matter their ability. Adaptations are made to support those pupils who struggle with reading and daily interventions are offered through the RWI One to-one Tuition Catch-up program and Fresh Start. These interventions, derived from RWI, are designed to offer a consistent approach to learning to read no matter which Key Stage a child is in. Assessments are undertaken at every opportunity and children are moved through the intervention programs at a speed suited to their needs so that progress is maximised.
